I was driving down the highway this morning, and a rock hit my windshield. It left a pretty large impact, which over the last few hours, has gotten worse. How concerned should I be?

Kinja'd!!!

The windshield is being replaced on Monday, won’t be cheap, but that’s why we have insurance right?

Any recommendations on mitigating further damage? It’s between 5 and 6 degrees Celsius

Don’t worry about it. The worse that will happen it will crack to the other side.

Driving in the cold(-20-25) then they tend to crack really fast. You are getting it done Monday...

I drove with a few cracks for almost about a year.

Windshields are made of a safety glass. It’s like 2 pieces of glass with a resin in between where if the inner and or outter crack it will hold in place.

I have a couple chips in mine.

I also used to run the defroster on heat all the time, which is a bad idea, because lower part gets warm / hot and upper part is still cold. Cracked windshield I had once.

You’ll make it to Monday. I’m really sorry, Man. Just two days ago, I had something hit my windshield and put a small dent in it. Now I think I got off easy.

My windshield got cracked when I was in Idaho driving back to Massachusetts. I went a week and a half with a crack similar in size to yours without any issues (aside from a slight breaking of my heart every time I looked at it). Fortunately insurance covered the replacement and I didn’t have to pay a dime.

Can they not do it any sooner. Always had mine done either the same day or next day either at home or work. Does your insurance not cover the full cost (ie one replacement windscreen every couple of years or so at no cost and without damaging your no claims bonus).

You’ll be fine. Nearly every car I’ve ever owned had had more than one screen in it during my time with them. And they pretty much all died this way...

The Logo had a crack for almost a year. I only replaced it last week because it’s not actually legal and it kept attracting cops, even though they never bothered citing me for it.

We fortunately Don’t have a no claims bonus concept in the province I live in. Our Auto insurance is via the government. (Mandatory for liability, optional for collision and comp)

They have to order the part and I have to go through a government insurer approved shop.

It’s not legal here either (in my province)

Ouch. Insurance in mandatory here in the U.K. but you find your own agent/brokey/company and choose what policy you want from basic fire and theft to fully comp to cover all the bases.

If you have no claims in the first year you get a discount, up to five years, and many policy’s now cover a free replacement windscreen, free accident or breakdown cover with a third party organisation such as AA, RAC, Green Flag, etc... to get you home or work, free courtesy car or hire car while yours is in for repairs, some have a one claim per year policy that doesn’t affect your now claims, etc... some are expensive but it’s up to you which you get.

Our system is similar, but different. I work in Insurance (not doing much auto), but it’s hard to explain.

Driver and vehicle licensing, safety inspections, formally emissions testing and basic liability insurance($200K $CAD minimum) all must be done with ICBC, our government insurer.

After that, you can go private just like yours, but icbc also competed in the optional field. It makes sense for most people to stick with them.

My neighbor drove around with a similar crack for 2 or 3 years without ever being pulled over for it. A few co workers as well have been driving around with broken glass for as long as I can remember and I don’t think any of them have actually been cited for it either. I’m local to you, so I think you’ll be in the clear as long as you don’t otherwise piss off the cops.

As far as safety is concerned, don’t worry too much. The interior of the glass is coated, so it won’t suddenly implode on you or anything, if you happened to he worrying about something like that.

I’m not too concerned about the police. Mostly, it just bugs me, I keep my vehicles pretty pristine, having it there just sucks

Never said it doesn’t. However kinda hard to justify spending money on what amounts to a rather poor purchase decision in the first place. Secondly plenty of other, much more expensive, much more necessary repairs are needed before I get to the glass.
